Healthcare Cover in Europe
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) has replaced the E111 form. An EHIC entitles you to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment that may become necessary while you’re in a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland. To apply for your EHIC online please click here.

To be entitled to an EHIC you have to be a UK resident. If you are serving overseas this will soon be addressed by the addition of an alternative online form, but in the meantime please put your BFPO address in the Post Code field. Your Service Number and Rank are also required, to enable them to trace you if you have been subsequently moved on to a different posting. Members of the UK Forces should refer to this guide to ensure that the EHIC application form is completed correctly.

United States Visa
If you are travelling to the USA, on holiday or business, you must apply online for authorisation prior to travelling. It is recommended that this be done at least 72 hours before departure. The form is called the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation form (ESTA).

The online process is simple and replaces the previous on-board paperwork required for entry into the USA. You are required to submit your passport details online and in 90% of cases a confirmation will be e-mailed to you within 12 hours – an answer is guaranteed within 72 hours.

The application form is available now on the ESTA’s website. It is completely free, so beware of other sites implying there’s a fee to pay.

The ESTA lasts two years (or until your passport expires) and only takes five minutes to complete. Even if you’re only considering going to the States at some point in the future, it is worth filling in the application in case you forget nearer your travel date, and to ensure that the 72 hour notice period does not interfere with emergency travel. It is worth applying before you buy tickets just in case your application is rejected. When filling in the form you will see a “flight details” section, but please note that this field do not need to be completed. Once the ESTA is out of date you need to reapply.

Please note that the only method for this new procedure is online, so if you know someone without internet access, you may need to help them to register if they’re making a trip to the US.
