The HM Forces Railcard - the facts

The Benefits - HM Forces Railcards entitle eligible holders to discounts on most rail tickets. To take advantage of them, a valid Railcard and Photocard must be presented whenever a discounted ticket is purchased. The ticket will not otherwise be valid for travel and holders will thus be liable to pay the full (undiscounted) public fare.

HM Forces Railcard normally provides:*

  • 34% discount off Cheap Day Tickets & Off peak Travelcards (all Zones Only)
  • 34% discount off Network Awaybreaks
  • 34% discount off all Full Price and Standard Open tickets
  • 26% discount off Supersaver, Saver, Super Advance and Advance tickets
A discount may also be available on ticket types offered by individual Train Companies - please enquire locally for details

*Minimum Fare restrictions apply to all tickets and especially before 1000 on Mondays to Fridays and greater discounts may be available on other occasions using other (Family/Student) Railcards where held.

Questions? - For queries on use of the Forces Railcard and discount available for journeys contact National Rail on 0845 484950

Who is eligible for a Forces Railcard? - The following are eligible to be issued with a Forces Railcard:

  • All members of the Regular forces (including university, medical and dental cadets) wherever they are stationed; members of the Reserve Forces undertaking a period of Full Time Reserve Service (FTRS); HM Reserve Forces personnel who are called out for a period of permanent service of at least three months on broadly the same terms and conditions of service as Regular forces; NATO personnel serving in official NATO UK appointments or in other NATO posts based within the UK; Members of other government defence forces serving in official exchange appointments.
  • Spouses of all personnel noted in para.4a who are in Marital Category 1
  • Dependent children of those in para.4a including:
  • Unmarried children over the age of 16 years and under the age of 18 years who are normally resident in the household.
  • Sons or Daughters in certain circumstances over the age of 18 years old (in full-time education, medically dependent, or for compassionate reasons)

In addition, up to four children aged 5 to 15 years inclusive can travel in standard accommodation at a significantly discounted rate of the adult price (subject to a minimum fare of £1) when accompanying the Railcard holder, or spouse, provided the holder's tickets have purchased with the Railcard.

Unaccompanied children under 16 are entitled to child fares (half-fares) rates, which provide a better discount than that available with a Railcard and, therefore, children under 16 are not to be issued with Railcards.

How to Apply
Service personnel should obtain a Forces Railcard/Photocard application form from their Unit Personnel/Administration Offices. Railcards are provided at a cost of £15.00, which can be deducted from pay account

Warning
The above information is provided as a general guide to the Forces Railcard and should not be taken as providing regulations or entitlements in themselves. Better discounts may be available for other Railcards held (Family, Student etc.) and this should be investigated fully.

The full current regulations and application forms for Forces Railcards are available in Unit Pay/Administration Offices from the current DCI.
